Until one day, it becomes irreplaceable, then it becomes commonplace, and then it is replaced by something more advanced, and this goes on and on.…… If you use this idea to look at current blockchain projects, it may not be difficult to find out what is "valuable"…… 01 domain name In the blink of an eye, it has been 10 years since Bitcoin was born, but on a large time scale, it is still a fledgling, junior player who has just stepped out of the novice village. In the past 10 years, blockchain has dreamed of changing the world, but it has encountered endless troubles similar to what happened to cars back then. In addition to its own development problems, there are also a series of obstacles such as doubts from many people and an unfriendly environment.…… The result is that, apart from the "self-high" hype of insiders, we still haven't seen any scenes that can be integrated into ordinary people's lives, let alone "change the world." However, sprouts are always born without you realizing it. Two recent examples of the integration of blockchain and the real world are happening quietly without many people realizing it.…… One example is that Ethereum will obtain the first top-level domain name ".LUXE", and the other is that Cloudflare officially launched the IPFS gateway last month. These two things are related to domain names, so let’s first popularize some knowledge about domain names. I believe everyone is familiar with the domain name. It is the URL you type in the browser, such as: http://hellobtc.com. Domain names work through the domain name server DNS (Domain Name Server). Whether our computers or mobile phones, we actually don’t know where “www.xxxx.com” should point to. These devices can only access each other through IP addresses (for example, numbers like 47.100.111.48). Therefore, the domain name server DNS is needed to tell your computer what the corresponding IP address is for the URL or domain name you typed in. A world without DNS would be like hailing a taxi and saying, "Master, I'm going to the Bird's Nest." The master said: "We don't know it, you have to tell me the house number. ”So, you tell him which district, which street, and what number. The world with DNS is like a taxi driver who knows everything. You jump in the car, whether you say "Master, go to the Bird's Nest" or "Master, I'm going to the Vernacular Blockchain Headquarters", the master will directly say, "Sit down and get started! ” Therefore, the importance of domain names is self-evident. When opening a store, the golden rule is Location (store address). If you rent a store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, you may be able to rent a hundred stores in commercial streets in second- and third-tier cities in China. After talking about the importance of domain names, what does this thing have to do with the two things we are going to talk about? 02 Ethereum will get the first top-level domain name “.LUXE」 The number of ETH wallet addresses has exceeded 30 million. These addresses are quite difficult to remember, even more difficult to remember than the IP addresses used on the Internet. The Ethereum address is the last 20 bytes of your public key. Imagine that one day you want to transfer ETH to your friend, or if Amazon supports ETH payment, will you have to copy and paste the 20-byte address every time? As a result, ENS (Ethereum Name Service) came into being in 2017. ENS is to Ethereum what domain names are to the Internet. It allows users to register Ethereum domain names in a simpler and more personalized way. For example, a certain wallet address is currently 20 characters long. After registering ENS and mapping, you can create one similar to "hellobtc.eth". The registration, auction, bidding and other processes of ENS will not be discussed in detail here. When developing DApps and smart contracts, it will be much more convenient for developers when it comes to address code. 03 Cloudflare officially launched IPFS gateway last month Although IPFS has not yet launched the mainnet, it is already available for small-scale use. For example, you can build a static website and publish it to IPFS. For another example, there is now an online video player based on IPFS on the Internet. By inputting the hash value of the movie file, you can watch the movie online. So the question is, who is Cloudflare? Cloudflare is a traditional Internet giant, mainly engaged in CDN, DNS and security services. The second most famous IP address on the Internet is 1.1.1.1 DNS server, which belongs to his family (the first most famous IP address is 8.8.8.8, which is Google DNS). So, what is the significance of Cloudflare launching IPFS gateway? You can understand it this way: users can access content on IPFS through traditional Internet methods. Previously, if you wanted to access IPFS content, the most common way was to download IPFS to your computer and turn your computer into a node of the IPFS network. This is a bit like when BT first became popular, you had to use special BT software to download things, and it was very troublesome to make seeds. Later, with Thunder, it was easy, just click on the link to download directly. Cloudflare's IPFS gateway allows you to open a browser without downloading any software or typing any code, enter the name of the gateway and the hash of the content you are looking for, and it's all done. For example, if you previously accessed the "example.txt" file from IPFS, you had to first enter the IPFS network through software and then find the hash value of the file, such as "QmXnnyufdzAWL5CqZ2RnSNgPbvCc1ALT73t6epPrRnZ1Xy". Now that you have the gateway, you can directly enter "https://example-gateway.com/ipfs/QmXnnyufdzAWL5CqZ2RnSNgPbvCc1ALT73s6epPrRnZ1Xy" in your browser to access it directly. Or, you can also understand it this way: Now users do not need a high technical threshold to create an information website that cannot be censored by institutions, companies or other organizations. Now, an ordinary user can create a static website through the basic tutorial on Cloudflare, then deploy it in the IPFS network and access it through the domain name and gateway provided by Cloudflare. This website has all the characteristics of a blockchain: distributed storage, resistant to censorship, cannot be tampered with, and will never disappear.…… Sound cool? 04 Conclusion Although these two pieces of news did not stir up much excitement in the blockchain circle, they may become one of the landmark events in the integration of blockchain and the traditional Internet world. We always say that blockchain is a "fat protocol and thin application". Protocols also belong to the public chain ecosystem, but most people tend to focus on the number of DApps. This view is certainly correct. For example, “Spinach” DApps on EOS are now very popular. Many people ridicule that EOS has become the “No. 1 public chain” for “Spinach” and gambling. But so what? Those public chains that claim to "punch ETH and kick EOS" have no one using even a "spinach" DApp? Compared with ETH, IPFS and EOS, they have gone a step further and have begun to integrate with the traditional Internet world at the domain name and gateway level.
